"l Iove books written by people who've spent a lifetime earning the right to write them, who've spent decades toiling in the trenches before delivering their lessons to the world, who've faced down failure and disappointment enough times to weed out what doesn't work and preserve what does, who've given their life's blood over many years to learn exceptionally well how to do one important thing that can change another person's life in one important way, who've given up glitz and glitter in favor of the lonely, poorly rewarded pursuit of the truth, in short, who've lived the life of the unnoticed hero in order to leave this world better than when they found it. Susan Kahn is such a person, and her book is such a book, the product of a lifelong love affair with reading and spelling and with the students who struggle to learn these essential and lifechanging skills. Susan is a hero. And her book is a radiant symbol of what devotion, hard work, self-sacrifice, and determination can produce."

Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of Driven to Distraction

Sue’s Strategies Best Reading Spelling Method, Sue’s one volume encyclopedia, provides parents, teachers, and students with a thorough knowledge of essential reading and spelling skills for decoding and encoding. Using the RIPPS method, Sue’s text explicitly and systematically teaches the following content:

• sound/letter(s) & sound/symbol correspondence;

• 96 illustrated flashcards are included as a study technique for learning sound/symbol correspondence;

• the basic 6 syllable types;

• mnemonic syllabication strategies;

• innovative super sized suffix strategy;

• innovative I = E before suffixes strategy;

• major spelling rules, spelling patterns, & important suffixes;

• irregular spelling words grouped & presented in stories;

• practice exercises are included to implement skills taught.

Sue’s multi-sensory lessons add pictures, patterns, and stories to reinforce memory and to accelerate the learning process for each concept. The lessons build new skills while reviewing past ones. Sue’s Strategies Best Reading Spelling Method Ages 6-60, similar to other respected programs such as Orton-Gillingham, structured literacy, and synthetic phonics, enables people to progress rapidly to become highly effective readers and spellers. Sue’s research-based strategies stand above the crowd as a consummate resource for involved parents, tutors, teachers, undergraduate and graduate students.

Why does my method work so quickly and effectively?

I combined Dr. Jean Piaget's ideas about concrete materials and picture representations with Dr. Samuel Orton's concept of multi-sensory instruction. Although my students learned to read well, their slow progress did not satisfy me, so I began experimenting with memory tactics. Soon my students were improving their reading skills between two and four grade levels within one academic year. When I learned about Dr. Donald Deshler's research on memory and about Dr. Brock Eide's revelations on dyslexic learning styles, my teaching methods became validated.
